MS – Family Nurse Practitioner Program

The Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing offers a Master of Science in Nursing degree with a family nurse practitioner emphasis. The role of the advanced nurse practitioner is delivering primary health care to clients residing in urban and/or rural communities, with emphasis on giving attention to vulnerable populations who are underserved in the community. Graduates of the program are eligible for advanced practice recognition by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas and to apply for certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

The program is designed to be completed in five (5) semesters of full time study. A part-time study option is available. The total number of credits required is 53, which includes 78 hours of clinical practice. The curriculum consists of 12 semester hours of core content, 15 semester hours of advanced practice core content and 17 semester hours of family nurse practitioner specialty content. In addition, 3 semester hours of an elective and 6 semester hours of a non-thesis or thesis option are also required. Clinical experiences occur in urban and rural settings.

MS — Family Nurse Practitioner Program

The nurse practitioner program is built upon the concept of providing primary health care services across the client’s life span. The curriculum is designed to teach advanced nurse practitioner students to foster independent and/or collaborative practice for families, individuals, and groups within the context of the community. Students follow clients across their lifespan utilizing clinical research findings, health system management skills, and professionalism within a caring environment. Consumer advocacy and client decision-making regarding health priorities are also key concepts within the curriculum.
