Thursday evening, a Welcome Reception was held for Interim President Ruth J. Simmons at the Hilton Americas-Houston Hotel. Many Prairie View A&M University alumni, friends and community members were in attendance, excited to hear from the new leader of “The Hill”.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner provided brief remarks where he praised Simmons for her acceptance of the Interim President position at the University. ”We are so grateful that you are serving in this capacity at this time,” said Turner, “As long as I am Mayor, I hope that you will be Interim President of Prairie View.” Following his speech, Simmons interacted with the attendees; taking pictures, giving hugs and engaging in conversation. The Panther Ambassadors, a student organization, escorted guests to the main ballroom where remarks were made by the following individuals: Houston City Councilman Jerry Davis, PVAMU Student Government Association President Kendric D. Jones, members of the President’s Cabinet and Interim President Ruth J. Simmons.

During her speech, Simmons spoke about the University’s identity, its potential as a competitor and the students it produces. “Prairie View students set it apart,” said Simmons, “They are industrious, they are brave; they are caring, they are an asset to their future communities.” Following her closing remarks, Simmons opened the floor to guests and invited them to engage in dialogue about the University.

Another Welcome Reception for Simmons will be held in Dallas, TX to provide the Dallas alumni and friends an opportunity to meet and interact with the Interim President. The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thurs. October 5th at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. Registration is available online at
