Prairie View Relays Returns This Weekend

March 24, 2017

The legendary Prairie View relays track and field meet returns to Prairie View A&M University campus Saturday, March 25.

The meet returns for the first time since 2012, and with the return comes a new venue. The new PVAMU Track Stadium, which opened in July 2016 and hosted the United States Olympic track and field team for its final training camp before the Rio Olympics, will host the event for the first time.

Saturday’s event begins at 8:30 a.m. and is scheduled to feature more than 900 athletes from 50+ high school teams, seven collegiate teams, and several professional athletes and former Olympians who will compete in open events. 2016 Olympic long jump champion Jeff Henderson and 2008 and 2012 Olympian Rosangela Santos of Brazil are scheduled to compete.

“We are excited about the return of the PV Relays to The Hill,” said PVAMU Vice President / Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson. “This event has historically featured some of the nation’s best, including Panther legends and Olympians Debra Sapenter and Fred Newhouse. We know that legacy is also our future. We welcome all who will compete this weekend on all levels, and hope it will inspire the next generation of champions and Olympians.”

Tickets for the event are only $10, and fans can purchase a day pass that includes admission for Saturday PVAMU baseball and softball games for only $20.
