Prairie View A&M University Amends Mission Statement

November 10, 2014

In an effort to articulate Prairie View A &M University’s core values and purpose, a new mission statement was recently developed. After a comprehensive two-year review process involving faculty, staff, students and supporters to review the original mission statement was amended to more concisely expound upon PVAMU’s leadership in preparing scholars for citizenship, the university’s commitment to achieving outcomes and its focus on expansion and globalization.

According to Dr. Michael L. McFrazier, vice president for administration and chair of the SACSCOC reaffirmation process in 2010, the amended statement, “does not change the university’s fundamental thrust, but it is a much more succinct declaration of our purpose. In amending the mission statement, we expect that our students, faculty and staff will be better able to internalize it and share it with a broad audience.”

The amended mission statement is as follows:

Prairie View A&M University is a state-assisted, public, comprehensive land grant institution of higher education. The university was designated in a 1984 amendment to the Texas Constitution as an “institution of the first class.” It is dedicated to achieving excellence and relevance in teaching, research, and service. It seeks to invest in programs and services that address issues and challenges affecting the diverse ethnic and socioeconomic population of Texas and the larger society including the global arena. The university seeks to provide a high quality educational experience for students who, upon completion of bachelors, masters, or doctorate degrees, possess self-sufficiency and professional competence. The experience is imbued by the institution’s values including, but not limited to, access and quality, accountability, diversity, leadership, relevance, and social responsibility.

The revised statement was approved by The Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System and will replace the older version on the university web site, all departmental web pages and on any newly created marketing and communications materials.
