Black Nativity: Symbols of Souls is an adaptation inspired by Langston Hughes’ classic “gospel song play” and brilliant poetry which retells the Nativity story using African American music and narration. Since premiering off-Broadway in 1961, adaptations of Black Nativity using traditional and contemporary music with folklore and modern stories, have become annual traditions of many theaters around the country. Alive with song, dance, poetry and celebration, this musical journey invites audiences to explore Black history and celebrate the power of hope, survival, remembrance and joy for all!
