YharNahKeeShah "Ya-Ya" Smith is a native Houstonian.  She received her Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts from Kingwood College (part of the Lone Star Community College System), Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a specialization in Public Relations and a minor in Theatre from Sam Houston State University, and Master of Arts in Drama from Texas Woman’s University.  She is currently ABD in pursuit of her Doctoral Degree in Higher Education with a minor in Women and Gender Studies at Louisiana State University. 

Ms. Smith has been acting since the age of 4 and has studied drama at Iris Siff Merry Go Round, Theatre Under the Stars, as well as courses throughout the Houston public school system.  She has performed in a number of stage productions and independent films.  Her research interests include women of color in the arts, stage to film adaptations, performance of race and gender, undocumented students, historically Black Greek letter organizations, images and perceptions of students of color on college campuses, and depictions of higher education in pop culture and media.
