For Fall 2014 Incoming Music Majors

Any student interested in majoring in music must schedule an audition for the Music Program in addition to completing the formal admission application to PVAMU.  Students cannot major in music without a successful acceptance to PVAMU by the Office of Undergraduate Admission through the completion the university application process.

TO SCHEDULE A MUSIC AUDITION:

  1. Download and complete the Music Audition Form.
  2. After filling out the form, “SAVE AS” the form with your name as the file name.
  3. Return the form to music@pvamu.edu as an email attachment.
  4. You will receive email confirmation of your audition within 2 business days.
  5. Review the Audition Guidelines below to help prepare your audition.
  6. Students unable to make an in-person audition may submit send a video audition. Details below. NOTE: the deadline for video audition submissions for incoming students for the 2014-15 school year was April 5, 2014. Please contact us, if you are unable to make the August audition.

MUSIC AUDITION GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES

Timeliness: Auditions are scheduled to begin at 9:00am on audition dates. All auditioning students are encouraged to arrive at least 10 minutes early for the audition to complete the sign-in process. Practice space may be available upon request.

Attire:  Auditioning students–whether in-person or submitting a video audition–are expected to wear professional attire, similar to what may be worn for a job interview.

Accompanist: If needed, an accompanist will be provided at the auditions. Please bring music (in the proper arrangement and key) for the accompanist or you may bring your own accompanist.

WHAT TO PREPARE

Instrumentalists

  • Minimum of two (2) etudes or solos of contrasting style (one (1) technical/ one (1) lyrical).
  • All major scales performed in two (2) octaves, memorized.
  • Audition Repertoire Recommendations:

Percussionists

  • Perform thirteen (13) essential rudiments.
  • UIL snare drum solo.
  • Mallet percussion: Same as the instrumental audition (above).
  • Timpani: UIL solo.

Vocalists

  • Perform two (2) solo songs.
    • One (1) song must be in a standard singing language other than English.
      • Latin, German, French, Italian, Spanish
      • *SATB choral music is not acceptable for the audition.

Pianists

  • Perform two (2) solo pieces of contrasting style be a major Classical composer.
    • Bach, Debussy, Liszt, Mozart, Schumann, Schubert, etc.
    • Single movements of longer works are acceptable.
    • Simplified versions of more advanced works are not acceptable.

Video Audition Guidelines

  • Submit your Music Audition Form via email prior to uploading your video.
  • State your full name, city and state you are from, and the school you are attending at the beginning of your video
  • Perform all required repertoire as outlined above for your instrument or voice.
    • For scales, choose three (3) “flat” scales and three (3) “sharp” scales.
    • Please use the best possible microphone you have access to.  Please use good lighting so the video is not too dark.  Ask your music teacher for assistance.
    • Your entire performance must be on one video file.
      • You may record each solo and scale separately, however, you must merge them together into one (1) video file for submission.
      • Please submit video in either .mov, .mp4, or .wmv formats.
      • After receiving your Music Audition Form, we will email you specific instructions on how to upload your video to our university eCourses system.
