Sheleah D. Reed
If you want to know anything about PVAMU, the first person you should call is Sheleah Reed. If she does not know the answer, she can find someone or provide something that can answer your question. As the Executive Director of Communications, Reed has developed a knack for getting information out of people and getting it to the right people pretty quickly. It could be her nearly 15 years of varied experience in the field of communications – she’s worked in higher education, banking, entertainment, test preparation and even served as editor of PVAMUs student newspaper – or her fondness for Oprah, reality television, shiny things, shopping, quotes, and pop culture. Either way, those skills are used every day as she oversees the marketing and communication efforts that enhance Prairie View A&M University’s reputation and visibility.
The staff in the Office of Marketing and Communications oversees crisis communications, media relations efforts, social media initiatives and manage alumni relations including communicating with alumni and donors. The department also supports student recruitment projects, helps with fundraising, assists with website management, develops key publications and advertising campaigns, helps coordinate special events and oversees brand building.
“Miss Protocol,” as she is known around campus, has over 31 years of experience as a producer, special events and protocol management expert in entertainment and higher education. Before returning to work for her beloved alma mater, Carol spent 10 years working with nationally syndicated television shows PM Magazine, Laverne and Shirley and the Home Box Office (HBO) network in Los Angeles. She is the co-author of Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s publication, “8 Winning Steps To Creating A Successful Special Event” and was also trained at The Protocol School of Washington. Carol has a unique role at PVAMU, as she works for both the Offices of the President and Marketing and Communications. She works directly with the National Alumni Association and serves as the primary liaison for the National Alumni Association, coordinates alumni gatherings, class reunions and presidential events and fundraisers.
If you aren’t careful, Edie will rub off on you. She’s friendly, funny, always smiling and has a “can do” attitude that can’t be ignored. With 20 years of experience in database system management, she’s the perfect person to manage the university’s alumni database. Between that database and her knowledge, she probably can name or at least recognize the names of PVAMU’s 64,000 graduates. Challenge her and she will do it with a smile. Those skills are used daily while she assists with the outreach to our alumni through awareness gatherings, events, class reunions and activities.
Candace joined the Office of Marketing and Communications in 2012, bringing with her a host of ideas and a slight obsession with all things media. She remembers using magazine layouts as wallpaper, playing loud music and creating short stories. A native of Oklahoma City, by way of Dallas, Candace holds an MBA in Media Management from Metropolitan College of New York and earned both her bachelor’s and master’s (one is communications and one in community development) from PVAMU. When she is not planning alumni gatherings, writing for social media or updating the website, you will find her looking for the latest way to spread the good news of PVAMU to alumni audiences.
Christi’s love for writing and words started as a child. The daughter of a teacher, she loved writing stories, songs and even book reports. Fast forward a few years and that affinity has blossomed into a career path that encompasses what she loves: communicating. Christi is a former newspaper reporter, having won awards for her coverage of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A Louisiana native, she took her skills on the road and ended up at PVAMU where she has worked for five years. She’s responsible for handling media relations, managing the homepage of the website, photography, writing and a bevy of other duties. She now understands why “Prairie View Produces Productive People” and is obsessed with the color purple (the actual color, not the movie…well…maybe that too).
Jena L. Peevy
As a PVAMU alum and marketing specialist, Jena’s degree in communications coupled with her love for the University fuels her ability to find the best medium needed to tell the world of the greatness of Prairie View A&M. She contributed seven of her eight years in communications to the Division of Enrollment Management and adds that knowledge to this role, as she develops the execution of marketing and communication strategies to enhance and build the brand image of the entire University. She’s a native of Houston and a lover of all things related to music, sneakers and football. At the top of the list is spending quality time with family and friends.
