The Department of Languages and Communication holds its inaugural Communication Week February 3-9, 2014, for its 250 communication majors. Speakers from California, Washington, D.C., and New York, to Michigan and Texas, will offer lectures, roundtables, workshops, and professional office hours to help students examine research, career opportunities, and interests in public relations, journalism, media production, documentary film making, and academic careers, among others. The schedule is both robust and comprehensive in its coverage.
Communication Week strategically complements the National HBCU Student News Media Conference, also hosted by the department and the University the same week. The conference is positioned firmly in traditional journalism but also addresses the rapidly changing media landscape.
The featured Communication Week speaker Stephen A. Smith, sports journalist and columnist for ESPNNY.com, will also address the awards dinner for the Conference. An HBCU graduate, Smith began his journalism career as a high school sportswriter and is now a prominent voice in the sports journalism field. He is sure to shake things up.
