What is the difference between community service and volunteering?

Volunteering is any activity or service that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that benefits someone else, the local community, or the environment. Community service is an unpaid, voluntary act performed by a student or group of students with an approved non‐profit agency that benefits the local community. Prairie View A&M University puts special emphasis on the relational aspect of community service and therefore asks students to collaborate with non‐profit organizations. Individual projects that do not require some amount of collaboration with an approved non‐profit organization will not be approved.

Please note, not all organizations accept volunteer hours so before you start the journey to join a Greek letter organization please research the service requirement for that organization.

Volunteering at my church is not considered community service. Can you explain?

Volunteer work for the benefit of a church is not considered community service because the population that benefits is limited to members of the church. However, participation in community outreach (soup kitchen, food drives, shelters, etc.) sponsored by the church does constitute community volunteer service.

Why have my hours not been approved in the system?

There are several reasons why your community service may not have been approved:

    1. You must ensure that your hours have been recorded under the EXPERIENCES tab. In an effort to speed up the process, if you volunteer at the same place multiple times you can enter the start and end date with the total number of hours.
    2. During peak times, such as the end of the semester and during Membership Intake season, the amount of hours being input spike averaging around 50-100 inputs per day. The new inputs, unfortunately do not go to the bottom of the list, they go to the top of the list creating a delay in approving those who have input first.
    3. There are times when confirmation is more difficult to receive if the community organization does not respond right away to verify the hours input or provide more information about a project.

Why were my service hours denied?

Each denial has a response attached to it that will explain why you received a denial. Typically, hours are denied because not all of the required contact information is clear or present. Each prompt must contain the required evidence of service. There is also a prompt to attach a completed volunteer form – completion of the form may also expedite approvals.

How many hours of community service are students required to complete to participate in the Membership Intake (MIP) process

Students should have a minimum of 15 hours of verifiable community service to participate in the MIP process. Those hours must be within one year of the time you intend to participate in Membership Intake. For example, if you are interested in participating in MIP for the 2020 Spring semester your hours MUST begin January 1, 2019. Although prospective organizations may have different requirements.

If the University requires me to have hours registered with the University, do the hours have to be on campus?

The service hours you turn in to the University to meet the University requirements can be done on campus or off campus. Greek-letter organizations have different requirements, make certain that when planning to pursue entry into an organization that you have researched the community service requirements of the organization.

What are acceptable forms of documentation that will highlight service to a non-profit agency?

The University will accept the Volunteer Services Form as an upload in addition to official letterhead from the community agency that provides the number of hours earned, contact name, formal position of the contact person, contact phone number, and email address.

What if all my hours have not been approved and the Greek-letter fraternity or

No, as long as the hours input, meet the requirement for approval, each individual name will be input

sorority I am interested in accepts me for intake will this stop my entry?

into the database to ensure that no hours have gone unaddressed.

The Greek letter organization I am interested in asked all candidates to bring in documentation/letters from the Volunteer Services Office to confirm that we have met the service requirements for the University, is this possible.

Students are required to use the Involvement Record function in PVPAWLink to produce a co-curricular transcript in place of an official letter. Community Service Involvement Record information is already verified by the Office of Volunteer Services.
