Initial Teacher Education Certifications


At PVAMU, students who apply to the initial Teacher Education Program must identify the content area and grade level that they prefer. Certifications span grades Early Childhood (EC) through 12. Teacher certifications are offered to undergraduate candidates under the following degree plans and certification areas:


Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies

Generalist Grades EC-6

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach in an elementary school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all degree plan coursework, including specific curriculum and Instruction coursework.

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing two state teacher examinations: the TExES CORE Subjects EC-6 exam and the TExES PPR EC-12 exam.

o Requires application, admission, and successful completion of Clinical Teaching experiences.

o Requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies

Generalist Grades 4-8

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach in an intermediate/ middle school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all degree plan coursework, including specific curriculum and Instruction coursework.

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing the TExES CORE Subjects 4-8 and PPR EC-12 state examinations for teachers.

o Requires application, admission, and successful completion of Clinical Teaching experiences.

o Requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies

Mathematics Grades 4-8

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach in an intermediate/ middle school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all degree plan coursework, including specific curriculum and Instruction coursework.

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing two state teacher examinations: the TExES Mathematics 4-8 exam and the TExES PPR EC-12 exam.

o Requires application, admission, and successful completion of Clinical Teaching experiences.

o Requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies

English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) Grades 4-8

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach in an intermediate/ middle school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all degree plan coursework, including specific curriculum and Instruction coursework.

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing two state teacher examinations: the TExES English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 exam and the TExES PPR EC-12 exam.

o Requires application, admission, and successful completion of Clinical Teaching experiences.

o Requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies

Social Studies 4-8

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach in an intermediate/ middle school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all degree plan coursework, including specific curriculum and Instruction coursework.

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing two state teacher examinations: the TExES Social Studies 4-8 exam and the TExES PPR EC-12 exam.

o Requires application, admission, and successful completion of Clinical Teaching experiences.

o Requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies

Special Education Grades EC-12

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach in an elementary, middle, or high school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all degree plan coursework, including specific curriculum and Instruction coursework.

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing two state teacher examinations: the TExES Special Education EC-12 exam and the TExES PPR EC-12 exam.

o Requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies

Bachelor of Arts – All-Level Certification EC-12 in Teaching Field

Major: Physical Education

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach physical education in an elementary, middle, or high school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all degree plan coursework, including specific curriculum and Instruction coursework.

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing two state teacher examinations: the TExES Physical Education EC-12 exam and the TExES PPR EC-12 exam.

o Requires application, admission, and successful completion of Clinical Teaching experiences.

o Requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Arts degree in the major field of concentration.

Major: Health Education

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach health in an elementary, middle, or high school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing two state teacher examinations: the TExES Health EC-12 exam and the TExES PPR EC-12 exam.

Major: Art

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach art in an elementary, middle, or high school setting.

Major: Mathematics

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach in a middle, or high school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing two state teacher examinations: the TExES Mathematics7-12 exam and the TExES PPR EC-12 exam.

Major: Science

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach in a middle, or high school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing two state teacher examinations: the TExES Science EC-12 exam and the TExES PPR EC-12 exam.

o Requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Arts degree in major field of concentration.

Major: Speech

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach in a middle, or high school setting.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction

o Requires successful completion of all degree plan coursework, including specific curriculum and Instruction coursework.

o Requires successful completion of all TExES examination preparation activities.

o Requires passing two state teacher examinations: the TExES Speech 7-12 exam and the TExES PPR EC-12 exam.

o Requires application, admission, and successful completion of Clinical Teaching experiences.

o Requires successful completion of the Bachelor of Arts degree in the major field of concentration.

Bachelor of Arts – Certification in Grades 6-12 in Teaching Field

Agricultural Science and Technology Grades 6-12

Non-Degree Certification

Trade and Industrial Education Grades 8-12

o This certification is appropriate for prospective candidates who want to teach trade and industrial education courses (Example: Automotive Technician, Cosmetology, Law Enforcement) in a middle, or high school setting.

o This certification is based on documented, related work experience, licenses, and specific coursework requirements.

o Requires a high school diploma, or associate degree.

o Requires application and admission to the initial Teacher Education Program through the Certification Office.

o Requires successful completion of all deficiency plan coursework.

o Requires successful completion of the Texas Education Agency form titled Educator Preparation Program, Statement of Qualifications Secondary Career and Technical Certification (SOQ).

o Requires passing the TExES PPR for Trade and Industrial Education 8-12 exam.

o Requires application, admission, and successful completion of Internship experiences.
