Discussion:  All attendees introduced themselves and their positions.  Attendees also discussed their role with the Gates/Marshall Redesign Project.

15 Role of the University – TSU Dr. Lee Carmouche
Discussion:  What specific role does TSU play as a partner with Jones High School?
Provide professional development to fit the identified campus needs
Provide doctoral psychology students to work with identified students in the TSU Academy
Other:  Provide Summer Camp for current 9th graders in Academy (one week)
Action items:
Contact Dr. Cherri Godden to be motivational speaker at Jones’ January Faculty Meeting.  Schedule focus meeting with Dr. Ward and Dr. Caroll Robinson to begin the planning phase of the new Academy that is scheduled to open in August 2006 and discuss TSU’s role.

15 Role of the University – Prairie View A&M University Dr. A. Kumar
Discussion:  Dr. A. Anil Kumar – Prairie View A&M University
Prairie View will assist Royal High School with teacher training (both on the university campus and the school campus); math and science pedagogy; etc.
Royal High School is a small high school (400 + students); therefore, the school will not be downsized into SLCs.
Action Item:
Schedule a series of meetings with TSU, PV, Jones, and Royal High School to strengthen our school reform efforts and learn from each other.

15 New Gates/Marshall Academy @ Jones High School Ernestine Pierce
Discussion:
How can Texas Southern assist Jones High School with the new academy which will be implemented in August 2006?
  • Work with the School of Public Affairs and involve students with the Lectures (both at TSU and the school campus)
  • Work with the School of Communication to develop student internships (radio station, etc.)
  • Learning Styles Inventory – Psychology Department

Schedule focus group meetings with University Representatives and Jones Representatives to plan for the new Academy
