Faculty are encouraged to add one of the three sample statements below to their syllabi that the Office of Academic Affairs has approved.

These are suggested syllabus statements; faculty are invited to share their AI-related syllabus statements (e.g., your course policies regarding AI use) and assignment language with the Center for Teaching Excellence.  Together, we can build a repository for the campus community.

For instructors who choose to EMBRACE/PERMIT ChatGPT or other AI Generative Software:

“Integrating ChatGPT in the classroom offers an innovative and effective approach to education, enhancing both teaching and learning experiences. Artificial intelligence (AI) language models, such as ChatGPT, may be used for any assignment with appropriate citation. You are responsible for fact-checking statements composed by AI Generative Software.”

For instructors who choose to allow LIMITED/SELECT USAGE of ChatGPT or other AI Generative Software:

“While ChatGPT presents valuable opportunities for supplementing traditional teaching methods, it should be used selectively and thoughtfully. Limited usage of ChatGPT ensures that it serves as a supplementary tool rather than a replacement for human interaction. ChatGPT or other AI composition software may be used on select assignments in this course, as defined by the instructor. If you are unsure as to whether you are using AI language models appropriately in this course, please see me for guidance. You are responsible for fact-checking statements composed by AI Generative Software.”

For instructors who choose to PROHIBIT/EXCLUDE the USAGE of ChatGPT or other AI Generative Software:

“Intellectual honesty is vital to an academic community and for my fair evaluation of your work. The use of ChatGPT in this course is prohibited due to concerns regarding its potential impact on the quality of education and the development of crucial skills. All work submitted in this course must be your own and completed per the University’s Administrative Guidelines on Academic Integrity. You may not engage in unauthorized collaboration or use ChatGPT or other AI composition software. Using these tools without my permission puts your academic integrity at risk.”
