November 11 – College of Agriculture and Human Sciences students continue to break the mold when it comes to showcasing their great talent and dedication. Sophomore Nutrition major Kristina Edwards exhibited this when she gave a presentation for a recent conference workshop at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas.

The Healthy People Healthy Communities: Exploring Future Careers workshop is an event sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) which Edwards is a great representative of being a National USDA 1890 Scholar. With a purpose to recruit high school and college students into careers in agriculture and food systems, Edwards gave her presentation, titled “Breaking The Cycle,” about what has inspired her journey into studying nutrition. The group of more than 250 attendees were able to connect with her aspirations of becoming a Registered Dietician and the influences in her life that have helped lead her down that path.

Organizers of the event greatly appreciated Edwards’ participation and presentation in the workshop. Dr. Catherine Faver, a representative and professor at UTRGV, thanked Edwards for sharing her personal journey and achievements while in pursuit of her goals. “

[Her] presentation was perfectly aimed for our audience. [She] provided a great role model for our student participants! We hope we’ll see many of them following in your footsteps.”

To help prepare for the presentation, Edwards worked closely with PVAMU USDA Liaison, Horace Hodge and Jaki Sanders, CAHS Student Organizations Advisor and Lecturer, who spent time assisting Edwards with her speech. Having this experience to share her story and passion for nutrition is one she is sure not to forget. Edwards shares, “I truly enjoyed coming to speak to the students at the Healthy People, Healthy Communities Conference. Being able to share personal experiences while also spreading my knowledge about nutrition is what I love doing.“ She also believes speaking at this conference was a major accomplishment towards establishing herself in the field of food and nutrition and becoming a Registered Dietician.

This work was supported by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, 1890 Extension Formula Program projects under Section 1444.
