The College of Agriculture and Humans Sciences (CAHS) honored several of its own on August 17. The selection process was rigorous, involving nominations and a committee review of support materials, which resulted in one staff and one faculty nominee for inclusion in the President’s yearly faculty and staff award competition.

This year’s staff recipients were Adela Jackson, Administrative Assistant in the Cooperative Agriculture Research Center; Claudine Gee, Director of Fiscal Operations; and Ashwani Srivastava, Program Specialist IT. Teaching awards went to Milton Daley, Adjunct Assistant Professor; Minnie Cyrus, Instructor; and Richard Griffin, Professor.

Faculty Awards 2016For teaching awards the following process was used:

  • Graduating candidates in May were given a survey to nominate a faculty member. Criteria in the survey included 14 different areas ranging from preparedness in class, to explanation of concepts, to engagement with students. Written comments justified the nomination.
  • Following this, the same survey was sent to students and faculty in the College. Faculty could nominate their peers.
  • Based on nominations, three departmental finalists were selected to complete a teaching portfolio consisting of:
    • C.V.
    • Statement of Teaching Philosophy
    • Recent Teaching Evaluation(s) (Spring 2016)
    • Recent SOS Summary Results
    • Yearly Faculty Performance/Expectation Evaluation from 2015 (Focus mainly on the teaching parts)
    • 2-3 Sample Syllabi (Fall 2015 through Summer 2016), and
    • Any Research or Service Projects that Inform Teaching (Optional).
  • A committee of six students, staff, and faculty evaluated the portfolios, rating areas of the portfolio using a standardized rubric on a 5-1 scale (5 being the highest).

Staff Awards 2016For staff awards the following process was used:

  • Criteria for the award were sent to the nine-member CAHS leadership team for distribution.
  • Nominations with supporting documents (Resume, Support Letter, and List of Accomplishments) were submitted to the Interim Dean.
  • A committee of five CAHS members representing all areas (CARC, Extension, and Academics) was assembled to review materials. The committee made a final determination for the CAHS nominee.

While three staff and three faculty were honored at the college level, Dr. Milton Daley was the CAHS nominee for the President’s Teaching Award and Mrs. Adela Jackson for the Staff Award.
