If I have a question about CIP codes for academic departments, whom do I call?

What if a classroom is used by several disciplines?
All classrooms, regardless of use, are General Use (CIP) 000000 with instruction room use 11-18 and room type 110.

How do I handle SHARED SPACE?

  • If space is shared, there will be one room type but multiple room use codes and the percentage of use for each department. Up to three departments may report shared space.
  • For instance, a gym is used by both HPER and Athletics. The room type is 520 (athletic of physical education). When used by HPER the room use is 11 (general academic instruction) for 75% and when used by Athletics the room use is 56 (intercollegiate athletics) for 25%. The CIP code must also be appropriately reflected.

How do I handle VACANT SPACE?

  •  If the space is under renovation, the room type is 060 (alteration or conversion area).
  • If the space is inactive, the room type is 050 (inactive area).
  • If the space is unfinished, the room type is 070 (unfinished area) and the room use is 06 (shell space).

How do I handle space UNDER RENOVATION?
If the space is under renovation, the room type is 060 (alteration or conversion area).

What if there is a room on the room list and the department does not claim that room anymore?
Make of notation of such on the room record form and delete the line on the room list.

What if there is a room that is claimed by the department but it is not on the room list and there is no individual room record?
Simply note the room number at the end of the list and complete a blank room record form.

Do I use the Library room use code for our departmental library?
No, this code is only to be used by the John B. Coleman library. Departmental libraries are not designated. They are assigned the appropriate CIP and Room Use codes.

How do you distinguish between Conference Rooms, Meeting Rooms, and Assembly Rooms?

  • Conference rooms (350) are office-related that serve an office complex and are primarily for staff meetings and other non-instructional uses.
  • Meeting rooms (680) are non-office and not classroom related. They serve a variety of purposes such as for student organizational meetings.
  • Assembly (610) is designed and equipped for large groups and used for a variety of purposes, such as dramatic and musical productions, non-instructional lectures, etc., including limited use for scheduled instruction.
