PVAMU USDA/1890 National Scholars

Prairie View A&M University is pleased to recognize the latest Panthers selected as USDA/1890 National Scholars by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Kyla Faith Peer was selected by the Foreign Agriculture Service as a USDA/1890 National Scholar.  She is a Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) freshman Agriculture major, focusing in Agribusiness from Little Rock, Arkansas.

Peer is appreciative of the opportunity to represent PVAMU as a USDA scholar and is no stranger to USDA as her father has been a part of the organization for twenty years.  “I have seen first-hand, through him the growth and opportunities that can be afforded through the USDA,” expresses Peer. “As a first-time employee, the USDA will provide me with an astonishing avenue to help me grow and gain new experiences.”  It is her dream to use the scholarship to impact her community in Little Rock.

Ms. Dora Gonzales-Marin a sophomore Agriculture, Plant and Soil Science student from Hempstead, TX, has also been selected by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NCRS), as a USDA/1890 National Scholar.  She completed a USDA work experience with NRCS in Beaumont, TX,  and a Texas A&M University/Prairie View A&M University Water Quality Internship during the summer of 2018.

“I have always liked to help others.  This scholarship will help me with the ability to just focus on school and not on finances. Getting help is very refreshing and lifts a weight off my shoulders. After graduation my plan is to work for the USDA and serve the people in my community,” shares Gonzales-Marin.

The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program offers scholarships to U.S. citizens who are seeking a bachelor’s degree at one of the nineteen 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Institutions in any field of study in agriculture, food, natural resource sciences or other related disciplines.

High school and current college students are eligible to apply for the scholarship which provides full tuition, books, room, board and a summer internship for up to 4 years, to students pursuing an Agricultural or Ag-related bachelor’s degree.
