The Fall 2017 Semester General Student Assembly will be held Wednesday, September 6, 2017, in the William “Billy” J. Nicks, Sr. Building, the Baby Dome. The Assembly will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. The invited guest speaker is former SGA President, Priscilla Barbour.

Priscilla R. Barbour is a native of Dallas, Texas and currently serves as the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s BP Energy Fellow for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce. She previously served in the D.C. office of Representative Cedric Richmond of the 2nd Congressional District of Louisiana, Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. In this capacity, she managed a policy portfolio covering the issues of energy, environment, maritime, transportation, infrastructure, and science and technology.

Ms. Barbour holds a Master of Public Service and Administration from the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University, with a concentration in State and Local Government Policy and Management. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Sociology from Prairie View A&M University. Priscilla previously served as a Bush Board Fellow and board member of the Bryan/College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau, and served as Co-Chair of the Bush School Diversity Committee, where she created initiatives to boost diversity recruitment of graduate students wanting to pursue public service.

While at Prairie View A&M University, Ms. Barbour played an integral role as Student Body President in securing the university as an official polling location for all elections after decades of discrepancies between the State of Texas, Waller County and Prairie View A&M University. Ms. Barbour was also named one of the inaugural members of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities “HBCU All-Stars”. In 2014, she received the Prairie View A&M University Student Humanitarian Award, the highest award granted on Prairie View’s campus. Additionally, she was recognized by the Center for HBCU Media Advocacy as the HBCU Female Student of the Year, along with Prairie View A&M University Student Government Association being named SGA of the Year. Priscilla was also featured by MSNBC in a segment titled “Women in Politics 2014: College Edition.”

Her journey is a reflection of a quote shared with her by her mother, “Position yourself where you can choose, and not be chosen.”

Classes will be released at 9:20 a.m. and resume at 12 o’clock noon. Students who attend the assembly will have a chance to win one of the following: iPad, $150 bookstore gift card, $500 textbook voucher. All auxiliary services (i.e. bookstore, financial aid, food service, etc.) will be closed until the assembly ends.

Full campus wide participation is encouraged and greatly appreciated!
