The Annual Agricultural Field Day “Ag Field Day”, hosted by the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences, will be held April 28th and 29th on the Demonstration Farm at Prairie View A&M University (Main Campus) and at the Carden-Waller Cooperative Extension Building. The event is open to the public and will address issues and showcase modern techniques and best practices in agriculture.
Attendees will be able to attend workshops that focus on livestock and forage, small ruminant and horticulture, with particular emphasis on home and commercial vegetable production. “Ag Field Day represents a culmination of our programming throughout the year,” said a former program leader for Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Program at PVAMU. While on campus, attendees will have the opportunity to see the research the CAHS is conducting, the programs the extension program is emphasizing in the counties, and have a chance to see an actual production being implemented.
He says there are a large number of people who are interested in locally produced food and small scale backyard productions. Because of this interest, he said, “We are attempting to engage people on how to produce their own food in the backyard for health and safety consumption.” The extension program also offers programing that focuses on the growth of medicinal plants. “There is a big emphasis on growing medicinal plants that will assist us with our health,” said Lawson.
He hopes there will be a resurgence in people knowing their food and knowing what they are eating. Lawton referenced the United States Department of Agriculture tagline created under the Obama Administration, “Know your farmer. Know your food.” “We want people to know where their food comes from and gain a better appreciation for the food,” said Lawton. For planning purposes, pre-registration is encouraged.
