First Place: Joshua Mason ($2,500)As part of the 2017 President’s Lecture & Culture Series, The Office of the President presented the 3rd Annual Essay/Oratorical contest Thurs. Feb 23rd. Students were asked to submit an essay about the 2017 Black History Month theme: “The Crisis in Black Education : Black Lives Matter.” The essays submitted explored the theme and incorporated the concept of “Black Lives Matter (BLM),” which in its broadest context means that black lives, and all aspects of those lives, are important and significant. Participants had the opportunity to win cash prizes: First place $2,500, second place $2,000 and third place $1,500. Those who placed fourth and fifth received cash spirit awards.

Students presented their speeches in front of judges and those who attended yesterday’s event. At the conclusion of the speeches, participants were informed of their placement. Congratulations to the following students for placing in the 2017 3rd Annual Essay/Oratorical Contest:

  • First Place: Joshua Mason ($2,500)
  • Second Place: Joshua Livingston ($2,000)
  • Third Place: Ervin Bryan ($1,500)
