The quickest way to get information on NROTC Scholarships and begin the application process is to log on to http://www.nrotc.navy.mil/. You can also call 1-800-USA-Navy and request an NROTC scholarship application be sent in the mail.

You must:

• Be a U.S. citizen.
• Be 17 years old by Sept. 1 of the first year of college and younger than 27 on June 30 of the year in which you are eligible for graduation and commissioned status. An age waiver may be granted for prior active military service.
• Be a high school graduate or possess equivalency certificates by Aug. 1 of the same year that entrance into the four-year NROTC Program is anticipated.
• Be physically qualified according to Navy standards. Note the following may be disqualifying:
  • Vision not correctable to 20/20 in each eye
  • Substandard color vision
  • History of asthma
  • Acute or chronic cardiac/pulmonary conditions
  • Chronic skin disorders (i.e. cystic acne, eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis)
  • Arthritis
  • Seizure disorders
  • Susceptibility to severe motion sickness
  • Alcohol or drug abuse
  • Medications used to treat ADD/ADHD
• Have no moral obligations or personal convictions that will prevent conscientious bearing of arms and supporting the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic.
• Apply for and gain admission to NROTC colleges. (Admission to an NROTC institution is not required during the selection process.) However, notification of admission must be received before the scholarship can be activated.
• Achieve qualifying scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT).

SAT: 530 Verbal, 520 Math
ACT: 22 Verbal, 21 Math

* Minimum scores must be obtained on the same test. Combining scores from different tests is prohibited.

The Scholarship pays for the following:

• Tuition and school/class related fees.
• Book stipend. This amounts to $375 a semester. For several majors, this will pay for most books. For others, like engineering, it may not cover all your books.
• Uniforms.
• Monthly allowance. All scholarship students will receive $250 a month. This allowance increases by $50 each year.
• Summer training pay (approx. $750.00/month).

The Scholarship does not pay for: Initial dorm deposit, TMA required Orientation week pack, dorm fees, meal plan, sports/entertainment passes, parking, etc.

Applications may be submitted from 1 April until 31 January of the following year. Completed applications will be processed as they are received. Notifications of early selection will begin in September.

All Scholarship nominees will be notified by 30 April of the year of enrollment.

The NROTC College Program is similar to being a walk-on for a sports team. You are able to try-out and evaluate the program, and we are able to evaluate your abilities to lead as an Officer in the US Navy. The NROTC staff will make recommendations to Naval Service Training Command headquarters for highly qualified students to be placed on a contract to become a commissioned officer.

• Gain admission to TAMUG and complete the Texas Maritime Academy Application which includes the NROTC College Program Application.
• Achieve qualifying scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT).

Minimum SAT and ACT test scores are generally the same as for the NROTC scholarship; however, extracurricular activities, work experience, JROTC participation, and other factors can allow slightly lower scores to be considered. Keep in mind the essay is a vital way to display your ability to communicate, so please review it and make sure it makes a good impression.

• ACT: 22 Verbal, 21 Math

Two and three year scholarships (called “sideloads”) are available through the College Program. These scholarships are EXTREMELY competitive. The best way to increase chances are to achieve a high GPA (>3.5) from the start, complete Calculus with a high letter grade, demonstrate leadership abilities, and perform satisfactorily on Physical Fitness Tests (this means achieving a score of “GOOD” in each event).

Alternatively, you can re-apply for a National Scholarship with a recruiting office. BY CHOOSING THIS METHOD, YOU CANNOT PARTICIPATE IN THE COLLEGE PROGRAM; however, you may still take NROTC courses.

The College Program provides uniforms only. There is no monetary assistance unless selected to receive a scholarship or placed on Advanced Standing.

If NROTC College Program students do not receive a scholarship by the summer following their Sophomore year, they can be recommended to Naval Service Training Command to be placed on Advanced Standing. Advanced Standing places the student on a contract to become a commissioned officer. This program IS NOT a scholarship; however, it does provide a monthly stipend ($350 for Juniors, $400 for Seniors). It also allows the student to participate in Summer Training between the Junior and Senior year.

A student is on a contract if they are selected to be a recipient of a sideload scholarship or placed on Advanced Standing.
