 With the theme of “Celebrating Our Legacy in Education,” the fundraising event proceeds will go to the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education for scholarships and faculty development.

The night was an opportunity to showcase the College, known for producing the nation’s top educators, counselors, principals and diagnosticians.

Dr. Roderick Raynor “Rod” Paige, seventh United States Secretary of Education and the Honorable Wilhelmina Fitzgerald Delco were honored as “Trailblazers” for their tireless commitment to education.

The President’s View & Vision Award was presented to Kevin H. Hoffman (center), alumnus and former member of the Houston Independent School District Board of Education. He also created the Barbara Jean Hoffman Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization named in honor of his late mother.

Class of 1961 Celebrates their Golden Anniversary

 

The Golden Class kicked off a weekend of activities and events to commemorate their departure from “ The Hill ” on May 13.

Throughout the weekend the graduates participated in numerous activities on campus including: a guided bus tour of the campus, attending the commencement ceremony, and a luncheon in their honor.

Dr. Samuel Metters honored by the College of Business

In late April, Prairie View A&M University’s College of Business held its annual awards and recognition ceremony to acknowledge outstanding individuals and organizations that have supported the College of Business throughout the year, graduating seniors, scholarship recipients, and the accomplishments of business faculty.

The event also recognized outstanding alumnus, Dr. Samuel Metters, Chairman and CEO of Metters IndustriesDr. Samuel Metters honored by the College of Business, Inc. was presented the College of Business Distinguished Alumni Award. The award is given to men and women who attended PVAMU, are outstanding in one of the traditional functional areas of business or have been entrepreneurs or pioneers in their field and who are doing things that are positive in their communities, state, nation or for the PVAMU College of Business.

Dr. Metters, received a B.S in Architectural Engineering from Prairie View ’57 and has been a loyal supporter of the university; Metters displayed his commitment to the University as former president of the Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association.

It’s been a long decade, but the wait is over for PVAMU’s newest volume of the Pantherland Yearbook.

The historical publication is now available for purchase. This student-designed book chronicles the events and activities that played a major impact in the lives of PVAMU students, faculty and staff throughout the course of the academic year.

There are also highlights and reflections through the past 10 years, including the viewing party for the 2008 presidential election to a special memorial section for fallen Panthers, the yearbook one-stop shop for the best PVAMU has to offer. The full-color publication focuses on many areas including academics, student life, sports and individuals.

Panther Nation Heads to Orlando

The 2011 MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney will feature Prairie View A&M University and Bethune-Cookman facing off in heart pounding football action, Sept. 4, 2011 at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla. The yearly event will be aired on an ESPN network.

The seventh annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge will be the first meeting between PVAMU and Bethune-Cookman, and the first time the programs will be participating in the event. Several additional events will take place around the game, including a high school career panel and the halftime Battle of the Bands.

Who’s Who Among PVAMU Graduates

Vernita Harris A native of Houston, Vernita Harris has proven to be a productive panther. A ‘79/’81 graduate of the PVAMU College of Business, with a degree in marketing and a MBA in management, Harris has been extremely active throughout the Houston business community.

Through her company IMPACT Strategies Consultants LLC, Harris has many affiliations with some of the most prominent organizations in the Houston area. As a member of the  Board of Directors for the Houston Citizens Chamber of Commerce she won an Outstanding Board Member Award in October 2010. In February 2011, Harris served as the Chair of MWBE Access Program for NCAA Final Four, a program designed to provide local minority and women-owned business access to Final Four procurement opportunities.

Most recently Harris stepped outside of her comfort zone and added publisher to her resume when named Associate Publisher of Who’s Who in Black Houston’s, 5th Edition. As the new publisher Harris, developed a scholarship to assist students at local HBCUs. At the unveiling of the of the book three scholarship checks were presented, one being to Ivan Butler, a PVAMU  freshmen marketing major.
